Lee Hi – Rose – Music Core April 20th 2013 Review

20 Apr

I know it’s been a while since I last wrote a review but I moved house and didn’t have the Internet for the longest time *sad face* (╯︵╰,)

But I’m back and I couldn’t be happier to write my next review for Miss Lee Hi’s brand new song, Rose!

I love Lee Hi, since her debut with 1, 2, 3, 4 (you can read the lyrics here) I’ve been a huge fan. To me, Lee Hi’s vocals sound unique against the rest of the K-pop industry. She has a very soulful voice and YG have done a great job crafting a retro, R and B infused sound that matches her voice to a T. It also works because it sounds completely unique to the majority of K-pop’s biggest hits right now. Of course, the song has been highly produced but her sound sounds so much more authentic compared to a lot of the ‘clean’ songs. Anyways, I’m rambling now – check out her performance on Music Core above and read the review below!

Style & Staging

Lee Hi - Rose - Music Core April 20th 2013

I think Lee Hi always looks cute. Yes you have haters that comment about her being short (wha…?) or that she never smiles but she’s a performer. She delivers emotion when she sings and connects to the music so for me, that’s not a problem.

Lee Hi has looked gorgeous throughout the First Love promotion cycle, even with her It’s Over performances, although I think her current styling for Rose is absolutely beautiful. From the MV to each stage performance, she has served fierce silhouettes accompanied with bold colours and floral prints. I’m a stickler for a floral print.

Although today’s outfit has been my favourite, she still looks like such a star! And for someone that doesn’t dance, she has got such great stage presence that you can’t help be mesmerised by her. I miss her purple eyes though…

Lee Hi - Rose - Music Core April 20th 2013

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 5 / 5 stars.

Choreography

Lee Hi has never been a huge dancer when she performs. That’s not a bad thing; some people are singers, some people are dancers. However, I think the choreography for her Rose performances are beautiful. Her backing dancers always look so elegant and of course you have to love the drama with the male dancer.

Lee Hi - Rose - Music Core April 20th 2013

It’s nice to see Lee Hi getting involved with the choreography, I think it’s only a case of time before she takes a greater role in performing. But, you can’t fault her for being flawlessly elegant with every move!

Lee Hi - Rose - Music Core April 20th 2013

Overall rating for Choreography – 4 / 5 stars.

Vocals

Lee Hi’s vocals are always perfection! I can’t get over how old she sounds. She has such a soulful voice – a voice that sounds old but in a good way. She sounds like she’s been singing for decades, her voice belies how young she is. I wish I could sing like her!

I love the fact that Lee Hi doesn’t rely on a backing track or lip syncs any of her performances. She can sing softly and controlled but her voice is absolutely deathly when she goes for a big note. Nevermind being one of the best voices in K-pop, I think she has one of the best voices in pop music at the moment.

Lee Hi - Rose - Music Core April 20th 2013

Overall rating for Vocals – 5 / 5 stars.

Overall Score

The Overall Score for Lee Hi’s Rose performance on Music Core is… 5 / 5 stars!

Lee Hi – 1, 2, 3, 4 – Inkigayo 2nd December 2012 Review

2 Dec

Yay for Lee Hi!

Lee Hi shone on the stage for K-pop Star and stunned everyone with her ridiculously catchy debut song, 1, 2, 3, 4. For those that don’t know, Lee Hi was a finalisted on K-pop Star, a musical talent show like American Idol or X Factor. The judges are made of JYP, BoA and Yang Hyun-suk represting JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment respectively. When the winner is crowned they then get to choose which agency they would like to sign to. Lee Hi didn’t win but came second to Park Jimin (who debuted with JYP as part of the vocal duo 15&); her performances was strong enough to land her a record contract with YG Entertainment.

Many people have said YG was the perfect home for Lee Hi as she has a very soulful tone to her voice that lends itself well to R n B and jazz influenced music. Everyone knows that YG, home to groups such as 2NE1 and Big Bang, often has a more urban vibe to their songs. Lee Hi made history with her debut song – she won M! Countdown on her debut stage! This is the first time a rookie artist has ever won with their debut stage.

So, I’m excited to finally have time to review one of Lee Hi’s performances of 1, 2, 3, 4. Carry on reading below for the review!

Style & Staging

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

I really like Lee Hi’s staging. I think she looks gorgeous and very fierce without looking older than she is. I think YG will have to be careful when choreographing her performances and her outfits because she is so young – Lee Hi recently turned 16. So I think they’re doing a fantastic job and Lee Hi gives just the right amount of attitude and swag without being alienating.

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

I thought Lee Hi’s style was really cute this performance. I loved her gloves and her black dress – she looked so fierce! She gives all the right attitude to fit in with this song. And this song is great! So catchy and fierce but with such a minimalist beat. It sounds so fresh and contemporary without being over produced. They’ve really let her vocals shine and boy does she have some vocals!

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 4 / 5 stars.

Choreography

I like Lee Hi’s choreography for 1, 2, 3, 4 – it’s quite minimalistic. In fact, the whole staging is quite simple with only a couple of props and backing dancers.

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

However I think this works really well. The whole sound of the song is so cool that having choreography that was too loud or fast would take away from the song. I think Lee Hi gives the perfect amount of attitude. All the small movements and isolated moves are so catchy! I love the minimalist style throughout the whole song and dance. Lee Hi reminds me a little of Jessie J – the same kind of attitude, you know?

Overall rating for Choreography – 4 / 5 stars.

Vocals

Well, Lee Hi’s vocals are just stunning! She is so flawless

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

Lee Hi has such a beautiful, soulful voice – I could listen to her sing all day! 1, 2, 3, 4 perfectly showcases her vocals and no doubt her live performances are just as strong as her recordings. It’s not every day that you get to hear such a talented singer and especially not every day you get to hear such a talented singer in K-pop. Don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing vocalists both in groups and solo stars but most K-pop songs are very produced that don’t always highlight the vocals. However, here 1, 2, 3, 4 is the perfect song to show Lee Hi’s powerhouse vocals.

Overall rating for Vocals – 5 / 5 stars.

Overall Score

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

The Overall Score for Lee Hi’s 1, 2, 3, 4 on Inkigayo is… 4 / 5 stars!

Review Conclusion

Lee Hi – 1, 2, 3, 4 on Inkigayo 2nd December 2012 – reviewed by K-pop Peach on December 2nd 2012.
I thought this performance was amazing! Unfortunately then overall staging doesn’t have enough wow factor.
Score – 4
/ 5 stars.
