KARA – Pandora – Music Core 15th September 2012 Review

15 Sep

For the second Live Stage Review post, let’s focus on KARA’s Music Core performance from today with Pandora.

I really like KARA, they are one of my favourite groups in Korea and for the longest time Mister was my most listened to song ever. It’s still at position four for most plays! The thing that I always love about KARA songs is they have a driving beat that doesn’t stop. It really gets me in a dancing mood!

As ever, we review the live stage on three different areas: Style & Staging, Choreography and Vocals. Without further ado, the review below!

Style & Staging

KARA - Pandora Music Core

I thought this was a strong concept but a little bland. Because KARA are one of the smaller girl groups, I think they need to deliver a little more with their stages to catch the audience’s attention. If you remember back to the STEP promotions then you can see they really tried hard with those. However, I was a little underwhelmed by the simple staging and colour choices.

Everything is very purple…

I liked the outfits and thought the accessories were a nice individualistic touch but I wasn’t so keen on the jackets. I mean, when one of the highlights of the stage is the girls dropping their jackets slightly to reveal their shoulders – that isn’t too exciting in my book!

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 3 / 5 stars.

Choreography

KARA - Pandora Music Core

I thought the girls shined in this performance! You can tell they are giving their all and the choreography is on point. Although the Pandora dance routine doesn’t really feature a signature move like their other dances (or other groups’ dances), I still thought it was fresh and was energetic in keeping with the song’s melody and sound.

Overall rating for Choreography – 3.5 / 5 stars.

Vocals

KARA - Pandora Music Core

KARA sang live on this performance and I was really impressed! Although some bits, like the ‘up and up’ bit were the backing track, at least they made this clear and didn’t mime to it. I thought all of the girls sang really well especially Seungyeon!

I thought Seungyeon stole the show with her powerful vocals at the end of the performance and today’s Music Core. Although Music Core doesn’t have awards, I think if you close the show it’s the greatest accolade and KARA did that today so congratulations to them! Seungyeon’s vocals are enough to earn them 5 stars!

Overall rating for Vocals – 5 / 5 stars.

Overall Score

KARA - Pandora Music Core 3

The Overall Score for KARA’s Pandora performance on Music Core is… 4 / 5 stars!

Review Conclusion

KARA – Pandora on Music Core 15th September 2012 – reviewed by K-pop Peach on September 15th 2012.
I liked KARA’s performance on Music Core and thought Seungyeon’s vocals were awesome! However, I think the overall stage and style were quite bland.
Score – 4
/ 5 stars.

KARA – PANDORA Romanised English Lyrics (카라 – 판도라)

22 Aug

The mighty KARA is back! They’ve released a brand new mini-album and the lead single, Pandora, is awesome! Not only is the song super catchy but the MV is fantastic! It reminds me a lot of other disco inspired MVs (T-ara’s Roly Poly or Son Dambi’s Saturday) but I really like it!

As always, the song is also destined to be a hit! The thing that I love about KARA’s hits is that they have a driving beat that doesn’t quite. It starts as the song starts and keeps going. A lot of other songs have a much more regimented structure and leave the bridge, final chorus or key change to get the song moving, but KARA do that from the get-go. Romanised English lyrics to Pandora are below. What do you think of the song? I guess this gives me a good excuse to not be so sad about T-aragate :(

K-pop 2011 Review – Top K-pop Songs of 2011!

10 Jan

I know I haven’t posted in what seems like forever… I’m so busy with work that I don’t have too much time to devote to the blog anymore but I still love it! And love you for taking the time read it.

So I know I’m out by a couple of days but I wanted to quickly recap my favourite Korean songs of 2011. This year there has been some fantastic comebacks, some brilliant debuts and all kinds of amazing music. I definitely think 2011 was a vintage year for K-pop. My personal highlight has been the resurgence of the girl idol groups and, what I’ll refer to it as, the Winter Battle of the Girl Groups (narf!).

So, without further ado – here are my favourite songs from 2011 (in a rough kind of order).

T-ara – Roly Poly

For those that read this blog, you will know that T-ara are my favourite band. I’m a little sad that they don’t seem to have such a big fan base outside of Korea. The girls came back stronger than ever in 2011 with the release of their smash-hit, Roly Poly. Featuring a retro concept and disco beats – the song captured number one on many charts and has even become one of the biggest hits of the year.

The Roly Poly MV also marked the first in the lineof 10 minute+ MVs from the girls. The song was so popular that they’ve made a musical based around it! Their remix version, Roly Poly in Copacabana also proved to be hit. To date, Roly Poly is my third most played song of all time (behind Utada Hikaru’s Show Me Love and Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain; in fact if you combine plays with the remix it is my most listened to song).

Wonder Girls – Be My Baby

In the midst of the girl group comebacks, Wonder Girls returned with a hot new hit, Be My Baby. Featuring an MV similar to Beyonce’s Single Ladies, catchy choreography and a funky melody you’d think they were destined to hit the top spot, right? But there doubts. I had such doubts!

The girls had been away for what seemed like ages. Yes, they came back with 2 Different Tears in 2010 but it has been a couple of years since Nobody – their last fully promoted single in Korea. 2 years in pop music can be a lifetime. So many new groups had debuted in that time, and with the Girls away in America working on cracking the USA, some thought they might not do so well.

However, these fears were soon put to rest as they debuted on Korean music shows and started winning awards and much love from fans. I love the Wonder Girls – they are my joint second favourite group after T-ara.

Girls’ Generation – The Boys

Girls’ Generation cemented their place as the dominate girl group with the release of The Boys, their first international single (complete with a full English version). Whilst the song didn’t have as much impact on international charts it was a massive hit in Korea and continues to chart well.

KARA – Step

After setting the Oricon charts alight with their Japanese promotions, all eyes were on KARA as they made their Korean comeback. I love KARA – I love that they have a very distinct sound, I describe it as having a driving beat – their songs are easily identifiable with the strong percussion and focus on rousing choruses. I love them! In fact, Step, Mister and Honey are all some of my favourite songs.

2011 may have seen their Japanese promotions skyrocket but their Korean career looked like it may collapse at any minute. The beginning of the year saw much of the band embroiled in a heated contract controversy that saw a large backlash against the band.

However, the girls returned with much fanfare and their single, Step, went on to be a huge hit and one of my favourite songs of the year.

Trouble Maker – Trouble Maker

A late entry from Hyuna (4Minute) and Hyunseung (BEAST) – label mates of Cube Entertainment. Joining together to create one of the catchiest singles of 2011!

KARA – Making of STEP MV

6 Sep

To celebrate KARA’s new single, STEP, Mnet recently revealed a behind the scenes video of KARA making the new MV for STEP. I think it’s clear that the girls are having loads of fun with this song and are putting their difficult times behind them. KARA hwaiting!

Davichi – Don’t Say Goodbye Tops Instiz Chart

6 Sep

Instiz has just released their chart for the first week of September and the lovely ladies of Davichi win! They rank number 1 for their hit new song, Don’t Say Goodbye. Congratulations to Davichi, their new single is definitely a perfect song for September.
It looks like they will lose their number 1 ranking next week to KARA though. KARA is currently number 1 on the chart with 84 points to Davichi’s 81 – so close!

Check out Davichi’s MV for Don’t Say Goodbye below and KARA’s STEP – which song do you prefer? Autumn is definitely heating up to be a battle of the girl groups.

KARA – STEP MV

5 Sep

The lovely ladies of KARA are back with a hot new song – STEP! After tearing up the radio waves in Japan for the past few months, and becoming one of the breakout success stories of Hallyu, Nicole, Gyuri, Hara, Seungyeon and Jiyoung are back with an infectious new song!

STEP reminds me of Mister (one of my favourite songs ever) and has the same catchy beat and cute vocals that we love KARA for. It’s definitely clear the girls are putting a rough year behind them and focusing on the future – they are definitely back and will no doubt have a huge hit on their hands. KARA hwaiting! Is that ALL KILL and Triple Crown I hear knocking on the door? ^_^;

Kara are back with a hot new song! Lupin! It’s burning up the charts at the moment. Check out the video :)

Kara – Mister Live @ Jejudo Special Music Core

6 Dec

I’ve a lot of respect for Kara. They had to endure many tough times whilst trying to make it and it was really hard on the members. But I’m glad they finally made it with hit songs like Honey and Mister. Mister has a rather addictive bum shaking dance that makes me think O_O and also Chae Yeon! But oh well, the past is in the past ^_^ Enjoy the performance~

Brown Eyed Girls & KARA – Mister & Abracadabra Live @ Mnet Asian Music Awards

21 Nov

Brown Eyed Girls and KARA, two of the biggest girl bands in k-pop at the moment, joined forces for a special medley of two of the biggest hits. Awesome ^_^ I’ve really enjoyed all the performances at MAMA; granted it’s sad that SM Entertainment boycotted them and we had no SNSD etc. but the artists that did give performances really did give it their all.
