T-ara – Roly Poly MV Teaser

27 Jun

Any long term readers of this blog (and people that know me) will know that I love T-ara. I know I know, most people don’t like them as much as many other idol groups (2NE1, Kara, SNSD), but there’s a soft spot in my heart for them. I think they just make the kind of music that gets inside my brain.

The girls are back with a new song – Roly Poly! Check out the MV teaser below – doesn’t it look awesome?! I’m very impressed with the concept. I wasn’t quite sure how it’d look but when I first started to see the promo photos I knew I would be hooked! Likewise, I’m still not sure on the album title… but Roly Poly definitely sounds catchy! Very much like Bo Peep Bo Peep. This wasn’t my favourite song when they started doing their promotions (it still isn’t) but I like pretty much every single T-ara song without fail. Normally I listen to one song on repeat over and over again. I still do that when listening to their songs but each song has some plays!

Anyways! Check out the the MV teaser below! I can’t remember when their comeback stage is but it is some time this week! I’m totally excited! Jiyeon looks fierce in the MV! Qri looks cute (Qri is underused!) but still Soyeon unnie is my favourite! Soyeon hwaiting!

2NE1 – I AM THE BEST – Live on Inkigayo @ 26 June 2011

27 Jun

2NE1 recently made their comeback with I AM THE BEST! A catchy new beat driven song that is completely different from Lonely. I loved Lonely, I thought it was a very different kind of song to the K-Pop norm. However, they’re back with a zesty new hit! What do you think? Do you think they will get chart crowns with I AM THE BEST? I think if they promote it for long enough they will – I know someone people were disappointed that they did not perform Lonely on many music stages so hopefully 2NE1 fans will have some more performances to look forward to!

Namie Amuro & After School – Make It Happen Song & MV Teaser

17 Feb

Japan’s undisputed Queen of Hip Pop recently announced that she will be releasing a special collaboration album (which is cutely getting called Amuro’s Collabo by fans). Amongst the news that she will be dueting with lots of famous J-pop stars was that After School will be making their official, Japanese debut on a track with Amuro!

Amazing right?! Namie is one of my favourite J-pop artists (definitely top 5), and whilst After School aren’t my favourite band, I do like their music and style so I’m super stoked for them! Check here for a brief teaser for the MV and you can hear a short clip of the song:

Everyone looks amazing right? Especially Namie and Kahi. The song sounds really good too so be sure to check back for the full audio!

For me, this represents a landmark development in the Korean, Hallyu wave. Of course you had/have artists like BoA and DBSK and in the past few months we have seen the surge in popularity of KARA and SNSD (Shoju Jidai), but to my knowledge, this is the first time a Korean idol girlgroup has dueted with such a huge star in Japan. It will be interesting to know why Namie selected After School – I think they have similar, punchy and fierce attitudes and stage presence.

With KARA’s future looking stressed, and SNSD following a cuter image, After School definitely has a chance to launch in Japan with a strong, powerful debut.

SNSD Hoot Inkigayo Win!

7 Nov

SNSD continue to shoot down the competition with their infectious new song, Hoot. Inkigayo has always been my favourite music show – I tend to think of it as the most prestigious as well so whenever an act wins an Inkigayo Mutizen I’m like whoa! Congratulations! Check out SNSD’s winning performance:

SNSD Hoot Music Bank Win

6 Nov

SNSD continue their promotions of their third mini-album, Hoot, with a win on Music Bank’s K-chart. The battle was closely fought with a lot of hot competition from bands like 2PM and 2AM but the most popular girl group in Asia continue to dominate with their come back! Can these girls do anything wrong? Seohyun is especially pretty ^_^ <3

SNSD – Hoot Live on Inkigayo

31 Oct

SNSD are back with their third mini-album, Hoot! they have a really cool concept for the album – all 70s crime television shows with Charlie’s Angels inspired fashion! The song has taken a little while to grow on me but I really like it! Check out their performance on Inkigayo. Everyone is already talking about the ‘Robin Hood’ dance and it’s bound to definitely inspire loads of fan cams!

BoA – Hurricane Venus MV

9 Aug

BoA continues to show the rest of K-pop that taking longer than 6 months off might actually work well for you! As much as I love K-pop, I also have a lot of criticisms of the industry. The rate at which they work, the amount of work they produce and the time off they get is something I think many idols struggle with. What’s more, I think the K-pop industry needs to encourage originality and genuinely great music, dancing and production. Aside from the plagiarism that has dogged K-pop this past year or two, I think too many idols are idolised when they aren’t amazingly talented. Of course, this is not a problem just for K-pop music industry but all celebrity cultures. Nonetheless, I think BoA is setting an example that people can’t hide true talent. BoA is arguably the most talented Asian solo female at the moment in terms of popstar material. She can sing, she can dance, she can sing live. Her dominance of Korea and Japan really show that she has international appeal as well. Sometimes I think her achievements in Japan are taken for granted but she is one of the most successful artists in Japan, Japanese or otherwise. Japan might be the second biggest music market behind the US but is often a rather introverted one where foreign artists do not do as well as native ones.

Nonetheless, this video is amazing. It’s contemporary, it’s bold, it feels modern and different from everything out there in the music scene today – regardless of geography. You can tell SMEnt put a load of money into BoA’s return. The choreography somehow seems to work better in the MV than the live stages and to think it will soon be in 3D! That’s amazing!
