Girls’ Generation – I Got a Boy – Music Bank 4th January 2013 Review

13 Jan

The Girls are back! Girls’ Generation have returned with their infectious new song, I Got a Boy. Taken from their hit new album of the same name, I Got a Boy hit the top spot across all the music charts and became an All Kill instantly.

It’s been a while since the band had released a new Korean song so there was much anticipation for their new track and they didn’t fail to impress! Girls’ Generation have always been one of my favourite bands. They are flawless! They always bring their A game for every performance and I can never fault them.

Style & Staging

SNSD - I Got a Boy - Music Bank

I’m really enjoying SNSD’s style for their I Got a Boy promotions. I love the bubblegum pop colours that they’re using. It’s also really nice to see them bring a bit more edginess to their fashion. They’ve been rocking some fierce chic outfits recently – especially for their Japanese releases – but I’m really enjoying this more urban look.

But, as always, the girls give a little bit more for any S♥NE! Flaunting their toned stomachs was sizzling! SNSD hwaiting!

SNSD - I Got a Boy Music Bank

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 5 / 5 stars.

Choreography

Whoa, where to start! The choreography for I Got a Boy is fierce! I think they’ve really stepped up their dancing skills for this song. I love their routines – Gee, Oh!, Genie are some of my favourite songs. I even learnt some of the Gee dance routine.

But I Got a Boy is taking it to the next level. It’s not just the dance routine, but also the whole staging and story that they tell. I Got a Boy has been criticised by some because the song has so many different elements. Just like the song, the dance routine is also made up of different dance elements – some cute moves (<3 Seohyun's aegyo) but also fierce dance moves.

Overall rating for Choreography – 5 / 5 stars.

Vocals

Girls’ Generation are popular for their many charms – they can dance, perform, are charismatic and with some members have some of the most powerful vocals in K-pop. Taeyeon, Seohyun and Tiffany are all widely praised for their strong vocals.

Whilst I Got a Boy is more of a dance song, we still get to hear some pretty impressive vocals from Taeyeon, she has such a strong voice!

Review Conclusion

Girls’ Generation – I Got a Boy Comeback on Music Bank 4th January 2013 – reviewed by K-pop Peach on January 14th 2013.
Another flawless comeback from Girls’ Generation! Killer dance moves, powerful vocald and enough charisma to stop a bullet train – the girls cement their place as K-pop’s most likeable girl idol group.
Score – 5

Lee Hi – 1, 2, 3, 4 – Inkigayo 2nd December 2012 Review

2 Dec

Yay for Lee Hi!

Lee Hi shone on the stage for K-pop Star and stunned everyone with her ridiculously catchy debut song, 1, 2, 3, 4. For those that don’t know, Lee Hi was a finalisted on K-pop Star, a musical talent show like American Idol or X Factor. The judges are made of JYP, BoA and Yang Hyun-suk represting JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment respectively. When the winner is crowned they then get to choose which agency they would like to sign to. Lee Hi didn’t win but came second to Park Jimin (who debuted with JYP as part of the vocal duo 15&); her performances was strong enough to land her a record contract with YG Entertainment.

Many people have said YG was the perfect home for Lee Hi as she has a very soulful tone to her voice that lends itself well to R n B and jazz influenced music. Everyone knows that YG, home to groups such as 2NE1 and Big Bang, often has a more urban vibe to their songs. Lee Hi made history with her debut song – she won M! Countdown on her debut stage! This is the first time a rookie artist has ever won with their debut stage.

So, I’m excited to finally have time to review one of Lee Hi’s performances of 1, 2, 3, 4. Carry on reading below for the review!

Style & Staging

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

I really like Lee Hi’s staging. I think she looks gorgeous and very fierce without looking older than she is. I think YG will have to be careful when choreographing her performances and her outfits because she is so young – Lee Hi recently turned 16. So I think they’re doing a fantastic job and Lee Hi gives just the right amount of attitude and swag without being alienating.

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

I thought Lee Hi’s style was really cute this performance. I loved her gloves and her black dress – she looked so fierce! She gives all the right attitude to fit in with this song. And this song is great! So catchy and fierce but with such a minimalist beat. It sounds so fresh and contemporary without being over produced. They’ve really let her vocals shine and boy does she have some vocals!

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 4 / 5 stars.

Choreography

I like Lee Hi’s choreography for 1, 2, 3, 4 – it’s quite minimalistic. In fact, the whole staging is quite simple with only a couple of props and backing dancers.

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

However I think this works really well. The whole sound of the song is so cool that having choreography that was too loud or fast would take away from the song. I think Lee Hi gives the perfect amount of attitude. All the small movements and isolated moves are so catchy! I love the minimalist style throughout the whole song and dance. Lee Hi reminds me a little of Jessie J – the same kind of attitude, you know?

Overall rating for Choreography – 4 / 5 stars.

Vocals

Well, Lee Hi’s vocals are just stunning! She is so flawless

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

Lee Hi has such a beautiful, soulful voice – I could listen to her sing all day! 1, 2, 3, 4 perfectly showcases her vocals and no doubt her live performances are just as strong as her recordings. It’s not every day that you get to hear such a talented singer and especially not every day you get to hear such a talented singer in K-pop. Don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing vocalists both in groups and solo stars but most K-pop songs are very produced that don’t always highlight the vocals. However, here 1, 2, 3, 4 is the perfect song to show Lee Hi’s powerhouse vocals.

Overall rating for Vocals – 5 / 5 stars.

Overall Score

Lee Hi - 1, 2, 3, 4 - Inkigayo

The Overall Score for Lee Hi’s 1, 2, 3, 4 on Inkigayo is… 4 / 5 stars!

Review Conclusion

Lee Hi – 1, 2, 3, 4 on Inkigayo 2nd December 2012 – reviewed by K-pop Peach on December 2nd 2012.
I thought this performance was amazing! Unfortunately then overall staging doesn’t have enough wow factor.

Ailee – I’ll Show You – Music Bank 19th October 2012 Review

20 Oct

Ailee is back! 에일리 파이팅! Ailee is actually one of my favourite K-pop stars. Although she only debuted in February this year, she has already wowed many people and received a lot of love! Her song Heaven is one of my favourites of all time – I love listening to it really loudly on my earphones, a bit like Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain ^_^

So, I was really excited to hear of her comeback – especially that this time it wouldn’t just be one song but an entire EP, Invitation (the First Mini Album). I don’t understand why a lot of Korean artists label their albums in chronological order but that’s irrelevant I guess. Ailee made a comeback this week and I’m excited to review her first stage on Music Bank with I’ll Show You!

Style & Staging

Ailee - I'll Show You Music Bank

I loved this stage! I loved how the start was completely different to most of the stage. I thought Ailee looked so beautiful at the start. She looks very cute with braided pigtails. Sitting on the stairs with lights on the floor like stars? So pretty! It looked like she was sitting by a lake at night time and lit by moonlight (am I going overboard here \(-_-);;) – so pretty!

Ailee - I'll Show You Music Bank

And then the beat kicks in and quite literally like the lyrics to the song, she’s transformed into a Glamazon with a capital G. Amazing!

Ailee looks so hot in her tight gold sequin dress and the red military jacket really gives her an editorial edge. As everyone knows, red is definitely the in colour this season! I also really enjoyed the lights and screen on the stage floor – it gave the performance an added layer of complexity that not all stages have.

Whilst I thought the dancers got in the way a bit, I thought it was a good stage. And let’s not forget fireworks! I wish every stage had fireworks in it!

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 5 / 5 stars.

Choreography

I thought Ailee’s dancing skills have really improved since Heaven. You can tell that she’s been working really hard to be a true performer with a whole range of talents and skills.

Everyone knows she can sing, but she’s really surprised me with her dancing prowess! I didn’t think she had it in her. And let’s not forget, she doesn’t lip sync so she was dancing and singing tonight! Wunderbar ∩( ・ω・)∩

Ailee - I'll Show You Music Bank

Ailee also showed off her charisma – she has this in spades! She really is super confident. I think some K-pop idols have a very unique star quality to them. They are beautiful, handsome, charismatic or super cute. I don’t think there are too many that have that Hollywood appeal (Jessica from SNSD springs to mind). But Ailee definitely feels like a star! She just oozes it.

Ailee - I'll Show You Music Bank

I mean, how many people do you know that look *that* confident on stage? Go Ailee!

Overall rating for Choreography – 5 / 5 stars.

Vocals

As with Heaven, I’ll Show You features some powerhouse vocal moments. No doubt about it, Ailee’s vocals are some of the best in the business. She may have the tendency to over sing/shout at times but when you have a voice like her’s that can be forgiven.

Ailee - I'll Show You Music Bank

I really think that Ailee has an exceptional voice. When she sings softly, it is so endearing. She can really express herself when she sings. But when she opens up and goes for those big notes – wow! Ailee hwaiting!!!

If you want to read the lyrics then check them out here!

Overall rating for Vocals – 5 / 5 stars.

Ailee – I’ll Show You MV

20 Oct

Ailee is back! With her hot new song, I’ll Show You, Ailee is showcasing her flawless vocal ability and dance skills! Heaven is one of my favourite songs (you can read the lyrics here). I was so amazed by her strong vocal skills – it’s not every day that you have singers that can sing with such passion and soul.

I think for many international K-pop fans, Ailee is most like the popstars we are used to seeing on stage – strong vocals and dancers. Pop groups have fallen out of fashion for a while in western music in favour of single singers. Lady Gaga and Rihanna are both two of the biggest English speaking stars and pop bands aren’t as big. Apart from 1 Direction currently winning over the USA with their songs, I can’t think of too many groups that are popular (not including rock bands of course).

I also think Ailee is a bit of fresh air compared to most K-pop stars and groups. I love me an idol group as much as the next K-pop fan but it’s always nice to see something new! Especially because Ailee has such a strong voice. I love this song! Watch the MV above and also check out the lyrics here.

I’ll Show You – English Translation Lyrics

You’re probably wearing the clothes that I bought for you
You probably put on the cologne that I bought for you
And now you’re probably meeting her and laughing
Did you like her that much that you had to leave me?
How much better do I have to be?

No matter how much I try to erase you
We spent so many days together
Those times in the past are so regrettable
That tears keep flowing but…

I will show you a completely changed me
I will show you a prettier me
I don’t wanna cry like a fool over love
Over you who left

I will meet a hotter guy and I will show you for sure
A me who is happier than you
I won’t be sad without you, I won’t break down
Boy you gotta be aware – la la la la la

I carefully change my hairstyle and apply my makeup
With my high heels and short skirt
Everyone turns to look at me

If I ever run into you
I will give a bright smile
Pass by your surprised face
And click clack go on my way

I will show you a completely changed me
I will show you a prettier me
I don’t wanna cry like a fool over love
Over you who left

I will meet a hotter guy and I will show you for sure
A me who is happier than you
I won’t be sad without you, I won’t break down
Boy you gotta be aware – la la la la la

I will throw away the ring you gave to me
I will erase the letters you wrote to me
Without any lingering attachment, without regret, I’ll forget you
I want to forget you, I want to erase you

I will show you a completely changed me
I will show you a prettier me
I don’t wanna cry like a fool over love
Over you who left

I will meet a hotter guy and I will show you for sure
A me who is happier than you
I won’t be sad without you, I won’t break down
Boy you gotta be aware – la la la la la

So Ailee is back! Heaven is one of my favourite songs ever! So I’m excited to see Ailee back and the song is amazing! She’s called the Beyoncé of Korea and with her powerful vocals and confident charms it’s easy to see why!

T-ara – Sexy Love – M! Countdown Smile Thailand 11th October 2012 Review

13 Oct

So, for the latest Live Stage review, we again look at T-ara’s performance! This time on M! Countdown. Can you believe that I’ve not yet reviewed a stage from M! Countdown? I think it’s because it’s on Thursday and I often don’t have time to blog on a Thursday evening. So I’m excited to be reviewing this stage! I’m also rather excited because it was a special performance for this week’s M! Countdown! The show moved to Thailand for the night and all the acts gave an outdoor concert performance… in the rain!

Style & Staging

T-ara - Sexy Love - M! Countdown Smile Thailand

I thought this performance’s outfit and styling was really cute. It was a little more sexy than some of the other performances but it just shows T-ara’s many charms. One of T-ara’s strengths has always been their adaptability. They can be cute, sophisticated, edgy or sexy. Normally CCM picks one style for one song but for Sexy Love they’ve gone for several!

In the last review the girls looked chic with smart tailoring and fierce silhouettes. I really liked that look. However, for this performance the girls brought out their sexy sides with daring leopard print dresses.

I thought the outfit was cute without being over the top. The black gloves gave it a glamorous edge whilst the boots stopped it from looking too much like a costume.

The stage itself was obviously grand being a concert! It’s such a shame that it rained so much. Still, I thought their charisma shined through and they all looked amazing.

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 5 / 5 stars.

Choreography

Well, what can I say! The girls did really well considering it was raining so much! All the shots where the audience were wearing rainmacs made me worried. I didn’t want anyone to fall over! Thankfully no one did but that stage looked dangerously slippy! It’s a shame it wasn’t amazing weather but no one seemed like they minded. In fact, they looked like they were having an amazing time on stage!

I think this performance has been one of the strongest. I think T-ara were buoyed by getting to perform at a concert in Thailand – it must be such an amazing achievement for them all. If you can imagine how hard they worked and when they were trainees – dreaming of making it big and having your music heard. And then fast forward a few years later and you’re standing on stage in Thailand performing your latest song – wow! Congratulations to them.

T-ara - Sexy Love - M! Countdown Smile Thailand

But to go back to judging them on their performance! I thought the choreography was really strong. They performed it with such confidence whilst it being so wet! I thought they might fall but they didn’t. T-ara hwaiting!

Overall rating for Choreography – 4 / 5 stars.

Vocals

Again, I think the girls performed strongly today. Although they might have been cold from all the rain, they still performed strongly. I thought Qri, Jiyeon and Boram all sang well today. I also really liked Hyomin and Soyeon. I’m still waiting for Eunjung to really sing her parts at the end. I know she can sing them live! Often Eunjung doesn’t sing her part live but if you look up some of the performances of TTL2 you can hear that she has an amazing voice.

T-ara – Sexy Love – Music Bank 5th October 2012 Review

7 Oct

Sorry for being away for a short while – the past two weekends were busy with lots of things! I’m not Korean so I don’t celebrate Chuseok but being half-Chinese I celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival on the same day so two weeks ago that’s what I was doing! The weekend I took part in the 48 Hour Film Project and then the screening was yesterday so all a bit hectic! But, of course I can never keep away from K-pop!

Once again I’m excited to review T-ara’s performance on Music Bank on Friday! I’m excited to see the girls still performing strongly and fighting!

Style & Staging

T-ara Sexy Love - Music Bank

So after the travesty that was last Inkigayo’s clown-inspired outfits, we’ve returned to some normality =^_^= I really loved today’s staging. Quite simple but very chic. I really like Ahreum’s outfit and thought all of the girls looked so pretty! Hyomin looked extra gorgeous and I think Qri’s new hairstyle really rocked.

My two favourite looks from this performance were Boram’s and Eunjung’s. I think Boram has really shined for the performances of Sexy Love. Her sweet and cute personality complement the routine and song really well. She’s like cute love as opposed to sexy love but still awesome! I thought Eunjung’s hair looked fierce today! They don’t always get this right… but for this performance it was very sophisticated.

For whatever reason, this performance was shortened so we missed out on some of the extra lines and I do think it played with the overall feel and rhythm of the song. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this performance – I just wish it was longer!

Overall rating for Style & Staging – 5 / 5 stars.

Choreography

I really liked Ahreum’s dance intro stage. I think with Ahreum they have found a greater rapper and really good dancer giving T-ara an extra dimension. Of course, I think if Hwayoung was still in T-ara she’d put on a fierce rap but I think Ahreum’s dance skills are really strong. Possibly this was one of the areas that T-ara lacked compared to other girl groups – if you compare 4Minute or SNSD, both HyunA and Hyoyeon are incredible dancers.

T-ara - Sexy Love Music Bank

There was almost an accident in today’s performance where Hyomin almost bumped into Ahreum (I didn’t screencap it) but they handled it so well! Boram stepped up her aegyo, whilst Jiyeon and Hyomin looked flawless. I also think Eunjung who has probably had the most difficult experience recently, is gradually feeling more confident. Overall, I love this performance!

Plus, Soyeon gave out a cute little heart sign! <3

Overall rating for Choreography – 5 / 5 stars.

Vocals

T-ara - Sexy Love Music Bank

Although this performance was shortened I think the girls’ vocals were strong today. It’s probably not their best performance I’ve heard but they might be tired from all their international showcase shows in Hong Kong and Malaysia. I still really liked it but I wish Eunjung had more confidence to really go for her lines! Props to Boram again – she’s so cute!

Overall rating for Vocals – 4 / 5 stars.

Overall Score

PSY – Gangnam Style – Number 1 in the UK!

30 Sep

Viral sensation PSY has become the first Korean artist to have a number 1 single in the UK ever! A massive congratulations to PSY and Gangnam Style! :)

This is truly an amazing achievement. I think PSY might even be the first ever East Asian artist time achieve a number one. I’ve loved K-pop for several years now and never really thought we’d see a Korean artist at the top of the chart but it the honour is bestowed to PSY and I couldn’t be happier.

This is a huge testament to the Hallyu wave; it shows no signs of stopping!
